Mrs. Woodlief Is Retiring!

The word is out - it's true. Mrs. Woodlief is retiring from teaching in Duval County Public Schools. After 34 years of teaching Duval County School's students the joy of art, Mrs. Woodlief will spend the next part of her career as a Museum Educator at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. "It has been an incredible ride at Chaffee Trail Elementary School. I have enjoyed SO MUCH building an art program from the ground up at this fabulous "School of the Future." My students have brought me so much joy and I am hoping to find the perfect replacement to carry on the Chaffee Trail tradition of excellence.

I hope that my students have come to love the Cummer Museum just as I have because I have booked field trips for our entire student body for the last few years. They know that the art museum is for everyone! So this is not good-by but"I'll see you later" at the Cummer Museum.

"Wild About Learning" Circle Painting - An Ongoing Tradition

With the school year winding down, the traditional "circle theme painting" was hung this week documenting our school's theme along side of 3 other circle paintings from our first three years here at Chaffee Trail Elementary. This years painting reflects this year's theme, "Wild About Learning" and shows wild animals reading some of this year's books of the month. Stay tuned as a new painting will be created based on our new theme for the 2011-2012 school year, "Growing Great Minds."

The Arts are in danger in Duval County. Our school board has threatened to cut out all art and music from elementary schools. I wrote a letter to the editor of our local paper, the Florida Times Union and it was published today. I hope it will make an impact.

Save the Arts!

So now parents are coming out of the woodwork in support for sports in Duval County Schools. Where is the outcry from business leaders and parents of students who benefit from the arts? After all, arts classes are responsible for encouraging the development of visual-spatial abilities, reflection, and experimentation. What would Leonardo da Vinci say? He was planning cities and inventing flying machines between painting such great works as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. Arts education teaches and nurtures creativity, judgment, and discipline. It’s in art classes that we are preparing students for future success in a global economy.

Florida Senators Stephen Wise and Nancy C. Detert, cited data proving that the more arts classes taken, the higher student achievement on SAT and FCAT, and the less likely a student is to drop out of school.

As a result of this study, United States Commissioner of Education, Arne Duncan, then went on to write to America’s school and educational leaders stating:

“At this time when you are making critical and far-reaching budget and program decisions for the upcoming school year, I write to bring to your attention the importance of the arts as a core academic subject and part of a complete education for all students. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) defines the arts as a core subject, and the arts play a significant role in children’s development and learning process.”

Commissioner Duncan wrote in his August 2009 letter to school and community leaders: “The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) defines art as a core subject, and the arts play a significant role in learning development and learning processes.”

I see everyday how my students who are struggling academically have benefited from arts education. I truly believe that my own childhood learning difficulties have guided me in my teaching. Realizing that I was proficient in art gave me the confidence to excel in math and reading. This was a defining moment in my education as the arts made a difference in the path my life would take - just as it does everyday for my students.

That means visitors to the fair who came out to see the 30+ quilt display, placed their vote for our quilt as their favorite. We also won a merit award ribbon from the panel of judges. We have started another exciting year of art learning at Chaffee Trail Elementary School. Fifth grade students started learning about our "Artist In The Spotlight," Michelangelo! We discussed all the wonderful masterpieces created by Michelangelo including the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In this photograph, you can see students drawing on papers taped to the underside of our art tables so they could fell what Michelangelo must have felt creating art at such an odd angle. They were also very interested to learn that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles share the names of 4 famous Renaissance artists: Michaelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci. They were especially surprised that the artists lived BEFORE the Ninja Turtles were created! I guess I'm teaching them SOMETHING! (sigh)

Congratulations to Chaffee Trail 3rd grader Haleigh G. who created this beautiful tropical fish using tempera paint and oil pastels. Haleigh won an "Award of Excellence" in the Florida Art Education Association's digital Art Exhibition 2009 - 10. A copy of her painting now hangs in our states capital in Tallahassee. We are very proud of Haleigh!

Arturo is both italian (on his mother's side) and part french (on his father's side) "That," chuckles Mrs. Woodlief, "explains your really bad accent!" JAXPARKS PRESENTS ARTS ON THE GO

Create your masterpiece with us!

Jacksonville, Fla., Jan. 14, 2010 – First Coast families are invited to show their creativity at JaxParks’ next installment of the Arts on the Go series at Murray Hill Art Center. This free art event offers hands-on activities including drawing, painting and crafting. Art instructors will be on hand to assist. Participants are encouraged to take their creations home to display and enjoy.

Congratulations to the Quilt Team at Chaffee Trail.

Again, our school was recognized at the January '09 DCPS board meeting for our outstanding quilt based on the Superintendent's Book of the Month. this year, our quilt earned an honorable mention ribbon from the judges at the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair. Our quilt is displayed in the front office so stop by to see this beautiful, entirely hand-stitched masterpiece created by Chaffee Trail students. Thanks so all our Chaffee family and friends for supporting us in this annual project.

I am very excited and proud to be elected by my peers as Chaffee Trail Elementary School's "Teacher of the Year 2009-10." It is such an honor to represent our amazing school especially when I am among some of the most outstanding professionals I have ever worked with in my 33 years of teaching. It is particularly an honor to be selected since I teach an elective subject, so often overlooked for this honor. The Chaffee Trial Quilt team has been busy creating this year's entry into the Superintendent's Book of the Month Quilt Contest. The quilt is based on the story "the Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins."

The Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins

Chaffee Trail Elementary School

Our quilt is based on the book, “The Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins”. The story was about an old woman who is in a nursing home. One day her daughter and her great grandson come to visit her. She is sitting in front of the window watching the sunset. Troy, her grandson, hands her a bouquet of lilacs from her garden at home. Miss Olivia doesn’t move, or blink, or speak, but she does start to think. In her mind she remembers many things from her life. Even though it is hard for Troy to understand why Miss Olivia doesn’t talk or even seem to know who he is, he loves to visit her. Being with her during visits is comforting to them both.

The quilt shows Miss Olivia sitting and looking out the window watching the sunset. As she looks out the window she remembers things from the past. While she is remembering she is feeling love, even though she can’t speak.

Did you know that we sewed everything on all by ourselves? We used a running stitch by hand. We painted scenes from the book on the fabric. Also, we used a technique called “trapunto” to make the quilt look 3-D.

We hope that our quilt will do well. We worked hard on it and made it with love and care.

While many students and teachers were relaxing, enjoying their summer there were a few Chaffee Trail teachers and students who were busy up at school working on a painted mural entitled,"Blazing a Trail Into the Future." The mural depicts a western landscape complete with a mountain range, buttes and dessert plants. Scattered among the cacti are pictures of Chaffee Trail students doing what they love - learning and playing, sometime doing both at the same time! The mural runs along two 60 feet long walls totaling over 600 square feet. Thanks to all the Chaffee Trail artists who helped this dream come to life!

Here is a "sneak preview" of our mural we are creating at Chaffee Trail. We had a painting day today and had visitors from Channel 4, The Florida Times Union, and the Communications office from Duval County public Schools. We hope to finish by the end of next week. Theme Paintings

Be sure watch the growing collection of "theme paintings" hanging at the north end of the "big hall" which reflect the themes for each school year. Our first year's theme painting was "Blazing a Trail Into the Future" and our second year's was "Teamwork Makes the Dream Work". Be watching the wall as the new painting appears with our newest and most current theme for 2009 - 2010, "Surf to Success".

Art Students Do their Part

For the second year, art students at Chaffee Trail have collected pop tops - the little rings on top of soda cans. We donate them at the end of each year to the Ronald McDonald House where they recycle them to raise money to cover their expenses. this year Chaffee art students collected 7 boxes (copy paper cases) filled with the little aluminum rings. Thanks to Chaffee Trail art students for doing their part to help others.

This year we were very fortunate to book field trips to the Cummer Museum Art and Gardens for every class at Chaffee Trail! With costs of about everything going up, the Cummer field trips continue to be an extraordinary value. We take time during art class prior to the trip to review vocabulary and critique reproductions giving our students important background information which enhances their experience. Take a minute or two to "sneak a peak" of what the museum must look like from the eyes of a kindergarten student.

Welcome Mrs. Woodlief's new Art Assistants, Chiamaka, Matthew, and Raymone. These three dependable 5th students report each morning to the Art Room to assist Mrs. Woodlief with preparing materials for classes, unloading the drying rack and delivering artwork to the classroom teachers. They wear a hall pass made just for them around their necks to show teachers and hall monitors that they are on "official art business" when running errands.

Art Is Finger Lickin' Good!

Third graders learned about color theory by mixing colored icing on graham crackers. Using one side of the cracker as a palette, the students began by mixing the three primary colors of icing to make secondary colors. They then added more of the primary colors to make intermediate colors. They continued exploring a variety of color combinations then painted an impressionistic painting on the other side of their graham cracker. After admiring and sharing their "masterpieces" they ate them. Art is not only fun - it tastes good!

Chaffee Trail Elementary Supports the Food Bank

Chaffee Trail 5th grade classes created 75 beautiful clay bowls to donate to the Empty Bowls Project which benefits the Jacksonville Food Bank. Mrs. Woodlief and Libraian, Mrs. Miller, accompanied 5th graders Blake and Francheska to the Empty Bowls Luncheon representing our school. They were also invited to select a handcrafted bowl by another student to take home.

Fall is here and it's time for the annual quilt contest sponsored by the Greater Jacksonville Fair. Each year 30 plus elementary schools submit a quilt based on the superintendent's book of the month. This year's selection is "A Cloak for the Dreamer", a story about a tailor and his three sons. These hard working 4th and 5th grade girls (pictured) hand stitched for hours after school each day to create this beautiful quilt in their own interpretation of the story. As pictured, they are Morgan, Bryonna, Michaela, Mrs. Woodlief, Kennedy, Rachel, Bailey, Haley and Hannah. Last years quilt came in 2nd place in the judges vote and 3rd place for the community vote. When you visit the fair next week, we hope you will take the time to vote for Chaffee Trail's entry. All the quilts will be on display in the (white building) exhibition hall. The fair starts October 29th and ends November 9th. Voting ends at 6 pm on Friday, ov. 7th. You can vote everyday so go vote for our quilt!

Duval Art Teachers Association Raise Money for Scholarships

The Duval Art Teachers Association is raffling off 8 differenat art palettes that have been painted by local artists in Jacksonville. These one of a kind works of art are worth hundreds but can be bought for $1. Raffle tickets are $1 each OR 25 tickets for $20. Each ticket can be labeled for a specific palette or can be spread amoung several palettes. The drawings will be January 16, 2009 and winners will be notifyed so you don't have to be present to win. All money from this goes to fund the Leslie Beddard Foundations which supports and encourages excellence in Art Education through workshops, education, advocacy and grants. Artist in the Spotlight: Pablo Picasso

This month we featured Pablo Picasso as our "Artist In The Spotlight." Chaffee Trial students learned about the many styles of painting used by the well known spanish artist but we focused on his most widely known style, "Cubism." After a brief discussion, watching this slideshow and listening to the lyrics of this song, the students created a portrait in the style of Picasso.

Book of the Month Quilt Contest

Every year the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair partners with DCPS to sponsor a Quilt contest based on the book of the month. Here is our 2007 entry that took 2nd place for both the Judges Vote and Community Choice catagories winning a cash prize for our school. We look forward to competing again this year in hopes of winning that 1st place blue ribbon! Stay tuned for more news on this year's entry.

Art Department Service Project

As an art teacher I am constantly asking businesses an other interested persons to make donations to my art program. It's very important to me to give back to worthwhile causes and set an example for my students. I have encouraged my students to help me by collecting "pop tops" - the aluminum rings off the tops of soda cans - to donate to the Ronald McDonald House
which is a home away from home for children and their families who offer a sense of community, compassion and service in support of any family whose child receives medical care in Jacksonville, regardless of their ability to pay. The students of CTES scoured the recycle bins in their neighborhoods last year and collected pop tops to donate in the name of our school. I was invited to meet Ronald McDonald himself and he thanked all the children at CTES for their donation pop tops in the name of our Art Department!

The summer break has given me an opportunity to created a few exciting teaching tools using Apple technology. I have used Keynote -Mac's version of powerpoint - to help my students understand the elements and principles of design: Color and Balance> Please take the time to veiw this example of how technology can enhance art learning.

Here is an example of technology integration into the arts. Check out this "Keynote" (Apple MAC's version of powerpoint), an assignment for a class I took at University of North Florida. I created a paper mache' "character", wrote a story about him, then presented the story in a powerpoint. Mac - the laptop cowboy, was a "computer man"from the wild, wild, west. As a newcomer to our city, he became frustrated with the many challenges he faced in his new home town particularly being a "MAC alien" in a PC world.

Welcome to my blog! I just can't sit still and relax over the summer like some of my teacher friends. I am here at UNF at taking a conference called "Arts for Learning, Tools For Teaching Summer Institute." Today I'm learning about creating blogs, wikis, podcasts and other exciting techno stuff taught by the fabulous Paty Savage. I hope that Ill be able to enhance my art program at Chaffee Trail Elementary by integrating more technology into my curriculum.
